Too Old To Rock and Roll, Too Young To Die

The last 24 hours reminded me of this joke.

Yesterday I sat down to finish an article that I have been working on for the past week. I couldn’t find anywhere. I searched the entire drive. Nothing. I went into trash. Nothing. I went to dropbox on the browser to find files I had deleted there and tried to restore. Nothing.

Sadly my time capsule gave up the ghost a week ago … so my time machine backup no longer exists.

Research time.

I had been writing it in IA Writer, which stores everything in iCloud and a little bit of research revealed that it is possible to restore deleted files in iCloud on the web. I set the process going.

Four hours later it had found 31 files. BUT .. it was still processing. So I left it chugging over night and this morning 97 files found with the question being asked of me … ‘which file(s) did I want to restore?’

I scrolled down and voila … there it was. I restored and it magically reappeared in the iA Writer directory. I read it through, and seemed to be right with the sole caveat that the new intro I remembered writing wasn’t there.

I went back to the cloud to see if I could find a more recent version. No luck. No worries, a new intro is easy compared to starting again. I read it again so I could rewrite the intro. As I went through it, I decided that it would be a perfect addition to my People First site.

And then. Only then. Did the ugly truth emerge.

I visited the People First admin and there sitting in the drafts folder was a later version of the article complete with the missing intro.

Turned out that ’posting it to People First was the exact thought that had run through my mind three days ago, so I moved it and deleted the IA Writer version.

Don’t get old people.
