US Customs and Border Protection Sued Over iPhone Search and Seizure

“An American woman is suing US Customs and Border Protection over what she claims is the illegal seizure and search of her iPhone at Newark airport.”

Ben Lovejoy

The Full Story

My Thoughts

Been watching other shenanigans around this kind of activity for a while now. Quite apart from the seizure being illegal (in my highly non legal mind) … and that is part of a much larger story - this is not just about the physical phone - but the data on the physical phone.

Bottom line, the phone was returned - and the data on the phone was returned - BUT the data was also copied into some government database aswell - that’s the rub.

And remember - this woman is a US Citizen - not just a visitor, where the US government has already decided that ‘your data’ is ‘their data’.

Free Photo Resources

I built this list a couple of years ago - prompted by work that Dustin Senos was doing. I had forgotten all about it, and then out of the blue - someone pinged me this morning asking if I could add them … which I did. And then I thought maybe I should promote this list more?

Introducing Living Notes For Better Timeliness

As I am building out my new sites at ‘Words’, ‘Pictures’ and ‘Sounds’ … purging dross, reorganizing and moving content from social silos, creating new material, commenting on threads that stream through my feeds, it is clear that I am fighting an uphill battle. And I can tell because of just how much I can see in my drafts folder, compared to that which is public.

But there is nothing that wrong with the unpublished stuff … it just isn’t public.

So, today I open a new section here on Words … ‘Living.Notes’.

I hope that the words appearing here will be more timely … ‘of the moment’ if you will and therefore more relevant. Some, who knows - maybe all, of these words will eventually move into other parts of the site, but for now at least they will be here.

And if this ogoing stream of consciousness is too much, I have also launched a newsletter that will pick up on the highlights … roughly weekly … so if you just want the cream, you can join over 300 other people … and counting … by signing up here.

The Future of Work

The profession of sales has just gone the way of all the others. Everyone today is a writer, a photographer, a networker, a sales pro … the real professions are being taken over by the masses.

But cream does rise to the top. Eventually.

Likewise all professions requires training - and the hucksters we see and feel are simply panicked people who have realized that nobody is going to promote them - they have to do it themselves … and they haven’t been trained in that art.

You won’t see or hear good sales people ‘in the networks’ … because that is not where they are.

The problem is also going to get worse.

The Future of Work is not the corporation - we are moving into the ‘everyone for themselves / survival’ stage.

But nobody is being trained or educated for that scenario.

News Is A Commodity

I think I have worked out why what The Correspondent is up to resonates so well with me.

“News is to the mind what fast food is to the body. It briefly satisfies your appetite for spectacle and diversion, but ultimately leaves you unsatisfied and uninformed. Because it’s mostly empty calories too.

Rob Wijnberg - The Correspondent

He then goes on and writes …

“News pays more attention to the sensational, exceptional, negative, recent, and incidental, we’re losing sight of the ordinary, usual, positive, historical, and systematic.”

I think this is why I became a founder member of The Correspondent. For the longest time News has been a commodity. And in parralel the topic of ‘News’ gets conflated with Analysis, Reviews, Opinion …

It is those things that people will pay for … in spades.

U.S. Slowdown at Uber and Lyft

“Revenue growth rates for the U.S. ride-hailing businesses of Uber and Lyft slowed this summer to their lowest point in years, according to research firm Second Measure, which tracks credit and debit card transactions. Growth in the number of rides also slowed, particularly at Lyft, possibly reflecting price increases instituted by the No. 2 ride-hailing firm.”

My Thoughts

The beginning of the end?

And interesting to see them called ‘ride-hailing’ companies instead of the usual ‘ride-sharing’. They are absolutely not ride-sharing …. but if they are ride-hailing … isn’t that called a Taxi?

Potential and Loss

“It’s not the most important thing in the world but after March I’ll need a visa to travel across Europe again. I won’t be able to leave and move to Berlin or Paris and that’s heart-breaking to me; the loss of potential connections, potential threads, relationships.”

2018: Halfway Through the Gauntlet

“The same is true in this fight. There are massive losses still to come. There will be losses in court, and there will be losses on the ground. Russia, a trivial power in economic terms, still threatens to overrun the Ukraine, it already has governments in Hungary, Poland, Austria and elsewhere which are amenable to it. Germany is teetering on the brink, with the retirement of Angela Merkel. The EU could yet collapse, and so could NATO. Worse, most Americans still haven’t recognized who our real opponent is. Our troops are still dying in Afghanistan, they’re still stationed in Iraq, and they’re still supporting Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen. Our politics are all focused internally. Any statement that Vladimir Putin is the real enemy and that he must be destroyed for this war to end, which is the plain fact of the matter, isn’t even being addressed.”
