Change. It’s Scary.
I was talking to a friend and occasional partner in the UK this morning. Just catching up on ‘what’s new’. He has a fledgling business that is taking off in leaps and bounds - and of course, like us all has to deal with customers. These words about one of his customers resonated .
I have spent 3 months trying to get the founder to think differently and we are still in a similar place, spending money on stuff that doesn’t work through fear of change and unwilling to spend on new things that will transform his business. I’ve even gone as far as telling him that if he doesn’t start to realise that he is getting in his own way, he won’t have a company in 2017.
Change is scary. I’ve always argued that I love change - provided that I am the one doing it. Applying to myself, I step with as much caution as the next. But - change I do. In my conversation this morning, I was reminded of this video that Brian Solis did just at the end of the new year. To highlight some of his liner notes …
… more and faster change is coming, and the only question is whether you’re going to be a part of that change or a victim of it.
… disruptive technologies and changing cultural standards will affect the news business, city planning, transportation and nearly every other aspect of how we live our lives.
I know this is not new news, people write about it extensively, people read and quote and talk about the uncertainty of the future … and yet … somehow … remain frozen.
Scroll through the video to around 8 minutes to bypass the set up of Brian’s background, and hear him talk about his new book ‘X’ - which talks about ‘The Importance of Experience to Business.’
Trust me - if you don’t think that ‘experience’ is important to your business .. you are wrong. If you aren’t working out how people - all people, not just your customers, are experiencing your brand, now, you are already putting your business at risk.
As Cenk Uygar reminded us - remember Kodak ?
You are part of the change - or a victim of it.
If you want to talk more about this - you know where to find me. I look forward to hearing from you.
