The Real Me
Not news. If you know of David Carr - you know he died last week.
If you didn’t know of David Carr - you don’t really care.
Many people are writing about him - this one particularly caught my eye - maybe it is the headline ?
“Keep typing until it turns into writing” (David Carr)
Reminded me of a few other favorites I have …
“If I waited for perfection, I would never write a word.” (Margaret Atwood)
“Don’t get it right, just get it written.” (James Thurber)
“To write is to write is to write is to write is to write is to write is to write is to write.” (Gertrude Stein)
“The easiest thing to do on earth is not write.” (William Goldman)
And then, not so famous for his writing - but famous for allowing us to read what we read Dave Winer posted this last month ….
Even if no one read my blog, I’d still write it. Not exactly sure why. Maybe it’s something like this – I would still cook even if I was the only person eating. I write because I am a writer. It would be the same if I was being paid for writing vs doing it for free, which is pretty much how I’ve always blogged. There was a brief time when pieces I wrote here were edited and published by Wired. But I still wrote the same stuff.
It keeps me driven.
This blog used to be focussed on business stories and opinions that I had around certain topics. But more recently I have been throwing more non business topics into the mix - just things that make me sit up - touch me - move me - interest me … me. That is not going to change. My music blog - Just Good Music and My ‘World Observations’ Blog - That Would Be An F both got destroyed recently - and were probably read even less than this one. They are going to reappear - once The Grid launches (go on sign up - you know you want to!).
Until then - in fact - even beyond then - this blog is morphing into my blog. Much as when I read the bloggers I enjoy - they have their main theme - but they also present themselves - and in turn that sheds light onto who they are - and provides additional context.
I have no idea if it will be read - but I am with Dave “Even if no one read my blog, I’d still write it.”.
Enjoy.
